At this point in time most business owners are not thinking about the normal management issues. Most are thinking about ways to survive this period and to come out of the current situation with a sustainable business at all.

We understand those worries. We do not pretend to know all the answers to all the problems facing small firms but we do recognise that the ending of the lockdown period, whenever that may be, will not be the end of the issues that now face us.

Whilst pure survival might seem to be the only pressing problem, it actually is not. The pandemic and the catastrophic impact on the business world, arrived so quickly that many decisions were made rapidly, and without knowing what the landscape would look like the next day. How many of us can truthfully say we had heard of furlough, let alone knowing how it should operate? Mistakes may have been made, albeit in good faith.

In the times ahead, restrictions on movement and working together will be relaxed. No doubt Government support will reduce or disappear. Decisions will have to be made as to whether staff should be kept on. Should they be on the same terms? Should they be offered unpaid leave? Should be subject to redundancy procedures? These decisions will face every business and proper procedures need to be followed.
